Before you subscribe, it is worth knowing that the free options range from excellent to useless depending entirely on what you are converting. This comparison is organised around that distinction, because the single biggest predictor of success is whether your source image is a logo or a photograph. Almost every disappointing vectorisation traces back to using a logo tool on a photograph.

Logos and flat artwork have a handful of solid colours with hard edges. Vectorising them is a well-solved problem: the tool finds colour boundaries and draws paths along them. Nearly every option below does this competently.

Photographs have continuous tone, soft edges and noise. There are no colour boundaries to trace — only gradients. A colour-tracing tool given a portrait produces dozens of stacked blobs that look like a bad posterisation and are useless for cutting or engraving. What you actually need is a tool that decides which lines a human would draw, then vectorises those.

So the honest first question is not which tool is best, but which of these two jobs you have. The list below is split accordingly.

For Photographs

This is our tool, so treat the description as informed rather than neutral. It runs a fixed pipeline: background removal, neural line art extraction, cleanup, then vector tracing. It targets photographs specifically — portraits, pets, vehicles — and outputs SVG plus 1-bit BMP for fibre lasers.

Good at: portraits and photographic subjects, laser and CNC output, browser editing before export, no account or watermark.
Not good at: multi-colour vector art. It produces line work and single-colour shapes, not a full-colour vector reproduction. If you want a colour-accurate vector of a photo, this is the wrong tool.

Inkscape Trace Bitmap, with preprocessing

Inkscape alone handles photographs badly, but Inkscape after a GIMP edge-detection pass is a legitimate free workflow. Run the photo through Difference of Gaussians or Sobel in GIMP, clean it up, then trace the result as a single-colour bitmap.

Good at: total control, entirely offline, genuinely free forever, and you keep full editing power afterwards.
Not good at: being quick. Expect 20–40 minutes per image and a real learning curve across two programs.

For Logos and Flat Artwork

Inkscape Trace Bitmap

On clean logos, Inkscape's multi-colour trace is close to commercial quality. It is built on potrace, the same engine underlying a lot of paid tools. Set the number of colour scans, tick "stack scans", and adjust the smoothing.

Good at: clean logos, high-contrast graphics, full offline control.
Not good at: noisy scans, JPEG artefacts, anything photographic.
Cost: free and open source.

SVGcode

A browser app that wraps potrace with a decent interface. No upload happens — it runs locally in your browser, which matters if the artwork is confidential.

Good at: quick logo conversions, privacy, nothing to install.
Not good at: photographs, and it offers fewer controls than Inkscape.
Cost: free.

Vectorizer.io

Similar in spirit to Vectorizer.AI but with a free tier. Results on flat artwork are solid; the free tier limits resolution and adds constraints on output size.

Good at: occasional logo work with no setup.
Not good at: volume, and the free output is size-limited.

Adobe Express / Illustrator Image Trace

"Photos" here means producing something usable from a photograph — not merely accepting a JPEG as input. Most tools accept the file and then produce posterised nonsense.

When Paying Is Actually the Right Call

Free tools are not always the answer, and it is worth being clear about when they are not:

  • You need colour-accurate vector reproductions. Vectorizer.AI is genuinely strong here and no free tool matches it.
  • Volume with an API. If conversion is part of a production pipeline, paid services offer APIs and support. Free tools generally do not.
  • Client work with tight deadlines. Twenty minutes of Inkscape time on a billable job costs more than the credits.

Why does Inkscape produce a mess when I trace a photograph?

Trace Bitmap looks for colour boundaries, and photographs are made of gradients rather than boundaries. It ends up stacking dozens of blobby colour regions on top of each other. To use Inkscape on a photo, run an edge-detection pass in GIMP first and trace that result as a single-colour bitmap.

Are free vectorizers safe for confidential images?

Check each tool individually. SVGcode and Inkscape process entirely on your own machine, so nothing is uploaded. Server-based tools including ours do upload the file, so read the retention policy — ours deletes uploads after 24 hours and does not use them for training.

Can any free tool produce a full-colour vector from a photo?
